Gone are the days when a quick snack meant a packet of crisps or a chocolate bar from the corner shop. Today consumers are demanding more and more from snacking, whether it’s on-the-go or at home.
Even though consumers demand healthier more varied options they still wish to indulge, whilst maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Desserts are considered a treat and can’t be justified as a daily occurrence you’re wishing to keep a healthy way of life; however mini desserts and snacks have been increasing in popularity year on year. Smaller portions of food are believed to be more satisfying than larger quantities. This allows us to enjoy a sweet treat whilst still being health conscious.
Cakes and cookies are still the most common miniatures out there. However, more and more brands are branching out into this area such as ice cream and dairy brands.
Take Magnum Ice Cream for example. We know from their Brand image and strap line ‘Take pleasure seriously’ that Magnum is a luxury ice cream, using only the finest ingredients and that the consumer is being very indulgent should they choose a Magnum over any other brand of ice cream. Magnum is however very aware that people today are living healthier lifestyles hence they launched the mini magnum collection, which is now widely available in all supermarkets even more so than the original size.
Weetabix is another brand whom has entered the mini market with ‘crispy minis’ a miniature version of the original Weetabix, appealing to the whole family, in particular the younger consumer with different flavour combinations and more visually appealing.Food brands that understand and satisfy new needs will remain relevant and reap the benefits.
So, no matter what your product may be, why not think about opening up new opportunities for your business and developing a new range that appeals to a different audience, one whose focus may be more on mindful eating but who still wishes to embrace the taste and convenience, or tap into the functional needs of a modern day family who wish to snack more healthily.
It’s vital to strike the right balance between maybe healthier options and great taste. Ultimately it comes down to the buyer liking you product, however it’s also important to create great presentation. Making your mini product look too good to eat gets the consumer reaching for their phone to take a few pictures. Taking selfies and posting these images can be the endorsement you need to make your brand a success. If you already have the buyer it maybe just a case or repositioning your product into a child friendly portion or a packet sized to fit into a handbag or pocket.

And it’s not just the food market getting in on the act. The world of Beauty also features quite a few mini versions. From the recently launched beauty advent calendars which have taken off in the last couple of years, to holiday essentials or just because they’re really handy and super cute. The online beauty retailers such as Look Fantastic and Feel Unique also enable the consumer to choose free mini samples with all purchases. We can get bored of wearing or using the same products so having smaller cheaper options available is a win, win for the consumer.
